Behance Network - Creative Portfolios + Projects + Collaborations

Posted by Eshark on May 14th, 2009

Online portfolio can be quiet helpful when you need more exposure to your works or projects. More exposure means more business and good opportunity is waiting to hire. Showcase your best works or projects on Free multi-media portfolio is a good move but choosing the right one is one thing you need to carefully think of.

behance-network.jpg

Today, I’m sharing with all designers and freelancers that you join a service like behance.net to upload your work which at the same time seek out more critiques to your projects. Behance offers a simple, stripped-down gallery which are more professional look compare to others and the interaction between you + the community members (which most of them are Pros) will makes you a better designer at the end.

Understand How To Protect Your Artworks

Posted by Eshark on May 12th, 2009

As you all may know, online fraud can be something that you want to avoid, especially to those full time (or even part time) freelancer in any of their creative fields such digital art, web designing, logo branding, digital photography, etc..

Putting up all your favorites and best artworks into hundreds of free online portfolio galleries can be a great exposure to your work and to your business, however how safe are you from being misuse by those Jackass  Jackal? Some online portfolio galleries maybe have protected your work by providing some good + clear rights protection which some are maybe costly, but NOT many of them are actually secured you from being jacked!

As a freelancer myself, creating a good design alone is not enough, to protect your creative work is one thing you need to get really serious into it. We as a freelancer need to protect our artworks and Creative Commons can be your best solution to grant copyright permissions to any of your creative work publish over the internet.

creative-commons-attribution.jpg

What is Creative Commons?
Creative Commons is a nonprofit organization - We work to increase the amount of creativity (cultural, educational, and scientific content) in “the commons” - the body of work that is available to the public for free and legal sharing, use, repurposing, and remixing.

What are they provide for?
CC provides free, easy-to-use legal tools - Our tools give everyone from individual creators to large companies and institutions a simple, standardized way to grant copyright permissions to their creative work. The Creative Commons licenses enable people to easily change their copyright terms from the default of “all rights reserved” to “some rights reserved.”

Take a look at these symbols, and understand what there are for :

attributionnon-commercialno.jpg

Attribution Non-commercial No Derivatives (by-nc-nd)

This license is the most restrictive of all six main licenses, allowing redistribution. This license is often called the “free advertising” license because it allows others to download your works and share them with others as long as they mention you and link back to you, but they can’t change them in any way or use them commercially.

attributionnoncommercial.jpg

Attribution Non-commercial Share Alike (by-nc-sa)

This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work non-commercially, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms. Others can download and redistribute your work just like the by-nc-nd license, but they can also translate, make remixes, and produce new stories based on your work. All new work based on yours will carry the same license, so any derivatives will also be non-commercial in nature.

cc-attribution-non-commercial.jpg

Attribution Non-commercial (by-nc)

This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work non-commercially, and although their new works must also acknowledge you and be non-commercial, they don’t have to license their derivative works on the same terms.

attribution-no-derivatives.jpg

Attribution No Derivatives (by-nd)

This license allows for redistribution, commercial and non-commercial, as long as it is passed along unchanged and in whole, with credit to you.

attribution-share-alike.jpg

Attribution Share Alike (by-sa)

This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work even for commercial reasons, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms. This license is often compared to open source software licenses. All new works based on yours will carry the same license, so any derivatives will also allow commercial use.

attribution.jpg

Attribution (by)

This license lets others distribute, remix, tweak, and build upon your work, even commercially, as long as they credit you for the original creation. This is the most accommodating of licenses offered, in terms of what others can do with your works licensed under Attribution.

Some online portfolio galleries may have these license applied, which is already very good, but as I wrote earlier, NOT many of them providing the effective license to get your work fully protected.

Before you apply a Creative Commons license to your work, you should make sure you understand how this license actually work, therefore, I recommend that you read the Frequently Asked Questions to learn more detail.

Good luck.. make sure YOU protected!

How Succesful Are You As a FREELANCER??

Posted by Eshark on Jan 27th, 2008

How well you do last year as a freelancer?? As for me, I really had a blast through out the year 2007 where I’ve come up with several good contacts + potentials clients + lots of sucessful projects graphic related. Here’s the EsharkDesign income statistic through last year 2007 which is supposed to be confidential but in the end I like to share with all of the freelancers out there.

statistic-esharkdesign-07.jpg

Here are some key points which I’ve been practicing through last year which I think best to share with you guys out there :

Business Card
Business card is the easiest + simplest way to represents your design services. Even though business card is just a simple kind of promotion to yourself and there are thousands of them, but one thing you need to understand is why people have to look at your business card more than two times. Create + design your own business card uniquely different from the others, put some ‘WOW’ factor on the design which might catch the intention of a new clients.

Contacts
Built up good continous contacts among the best. Make a good contact relation with friends that knows how to deliver good designs. For instance you are good in doing illustration but not on web designing while one of your friend are really good at it, so why not making a collaborations and start building up good design business together.

Join Community Design Online
There are hundreds of community online and forums where you can register for free as community member. Registering with a popular community online offering you to showcase your artworks among a number of groups of professionals, amatures, beginners and a hardcore. This will give you a chance of learning + understand fresh new ideas also having a good online discussion among the best with wide range of design topics + problems + solutions. Here are some good communities which I think you might love to join : Coroflot, NewWebPick, DeviantArt, AllGraphicDesign, DesinersTalk.

Create a Website
The fastest + easiest way to get your creative projects online and in front of the right people is to showcase your artworks through online. Compile + make a collections only of your best previous/recent artworks online will create a wide range of potentials clients. If you don’t have any idea where to start one or you don’t even know how to make one, you can choose from one of popular free blogs like Blogger or WordPress.com which recently is now offering 3GB of storage.

Priorities
Make your priority based on How Much You Get In The End. You have several list of clients wanting you to do a Logo design for instance, lets say Client A has given you design job for 3 logos at $200 each, while Client B has given you the same design job for 1 logo at $2000. At this point you should complete the design job for Client B first then only you complete the rest as the amount you’ll get is $2000 at one go instead of having $200 for 3 logos which might result only one of the logo is been approved.

Pricing
How much it will cost you for your design? That’s a question for you to answer it brilliantly. First thing you need to understand is how’s the level of your clients buying power. Are they a big shots companies or are they just a small agency with few workers. Secondly, what is your levels towards the eyes of your clients . Keep your pricing as affordable as it can be for your new clients based on their buying power, once you have built up a good business relation with them after a number of successful projects, gradually increase your design pricing as this will reduce your design job listings while it will increase your income.

Resources
Good graphic design resources will helps your ideas bloom and up-to-date. There are hundreds of good quality blogs designs resources out there useful for your reference. Here are some few good resources for you to check em out Digg, FreelanceSwitch, ColourLovers, WebDesinerWall, Mojizu,

That’s what I’ve been practising and I’m not a PRO and I’m not as good as what you think and I’m not as some says I’m the best. I’m still learning and eager to learn some more, it’s just I love to design and I got style!!..

What about yourself?

I'm currently pack with projects, however, please use the Contact form to send all your projects proposals and I'll get intouch with you as soon as I possibly can!
