Hi guys! Today, we’re going to have an interview with one talented + young designer from Lithuania. At first, seeing all his art piece makes me wonder that the artist have such great talent with wide experience, but eventually he is just 18 years old.. man.. it probably took me twice his age to get similar skills he has now.
I introduce to all.. Rokas Mezetis, I can assume that Rokas is one of very talented digital artist for sports illustrated that you’ve never heard before.. Read on the interview after the jump.
Briefly tell us little bit about yourself and what you do?
Hello, my name is Rokas Mezetis. I am 18 years old digital artist working under creative identity of Romen. I live, study and work as a freelance graphic designer in my hometown Klaipeda, situated in the west part of Lithunia by the Baltic sea shore. I like sports, especially basketball, movies and all sorts of art.
When you first started got interested into art and design?
Actually, it was my best friend Tadas, who introduced me to digital graphics when I was 14 years old. He showed me this amazing software called Photoshop and taught me some basic stuff. At first we were playing with liquify filter and making forum tags, but later, we moved on to bigger canvas. Eventually digital graphics became my hobby and it would be wonderful if this hobby would turn out to be my profession later on in life.
Describe to us briefly of what’s your typical day of work.
Since I am still at school, studying for my A levels, a usual day starts by getting out of my bed and going to school. After school I often get some rest at home and do the everyday chores. I am working as a freelance graphic designer, so I spend my evenings either working on some sort of projects or sometimes being lazy or watching movies.
If you don’t mind telling, where do you usually source for good inspiration?
I usually find all that I need at Abduzeedo, DeviantArt and Behance messages keeps me informed about all the amazing artwork of fellow designers so it‘s quite enough for me to get inspired. Music and nature is also a great way to get inspired.
Can you tell us among many of your creative art piece, which are your most favorite one and why?
It‘s so hard to chose one, but I think my selection would be the “Dwight Howard“ ADIDAS wallpaper. The creation process was very interesting because I used a lot of new techniques and the final product had a lot of positive comments about the piece, so it looks like a successful wallpaper.
Once you start working on a piece or design work, what is your frequent working process like?
I usually start with a rough sketch. First of all I make myself an image with no effects or small detail, just to know where thing will be and how should the composition look. After I‘m happy with the “sketch“ I start working with the detail. I think that the most important part of an image is lightning, so I spend a big part of my time working with lights and shadows as the final stage of the creative process.
How did you improve your design work and techniques?
In the beginning I was making forum tags and posting them at some sport forums to receive comments, critique and advice. That was really helpful at that time. I used to read tutorials at different websites, but I never followed them, because that seemed to be pointless. Instead, I tried to use and apply all the knowledge I gained from the tutorials for my personal artwork. That and experimenting by myself led me to where I am now and there are still plenty of space for me to improve.
What are the softwares + hardwares you currently use to produce your such magnificent art?
I use a single desktop computer with windows7. I work with Photoshop to fulfill my ideas and sometimes cinema4d to make some 3d resources. I also have a Wacom Bamboo tablet which helps me a lot.
If you don’t mind telling us again, what are your coming projects? and what are your goals or future plans for your career?
Nothing in specific really. I have stared working on new wallpaper and a mate painting so these may be the new images from me. I am also think about Evoke and my entries for the new art pack. My goals for the new future are to update my portfolio with some strong artwork and to create a professional personal image for myself.
If you’re not a designer/illustrators, what will you possibly be now?
I would be the same student, but with way less creativity and colors in my life. Computer graphics helps me to relax and express myself in great ways, so it would be boring without it.
What sort of advice you can share to those young designers and illustrators out there who are just started their carrier?
I don‘t know if I‘m experienced enough to provide advices, but never the less I will. No matter what people say and how bad situation looks, just keep reaching your goals and prove that these people were wrong about you. Keep working and experimenting and you will be good in no time.
Lastly, me at esharkdesign.com would like to say thank you very much again for this interview and wishing you all the best! to finalize, I leave the last words for you.
